The cover of this year's calendar features a photo of Cricket and FiFi, two rescue poodles owned by Amanda Lion and Ave Siecinski, surrounded by dozens of wonderful photos of dogs submitted by the people who love them.  Each month features a beautiful photo chosen from over 150 photos submitted to this year's contest.  You can view all of the photos here.

 Wall Calendars are wire bound and printed on heavy glossy paper with each page measuring 11" by 8 1/2 ".  Desk Calendars contain twelve 4" by 6" calendar pages and a 2012 yearly calendar, displayed in a quality plastic jewel case that folds for storage.  Wall Calendars are $20 each and Desk Calendars are $15 each, plus shipping/handling.  Shipping and handling is only $4 for up to four calendars.  Order more than one of either style and save $1 off the price of each calendar!  Mix and match or order multiples of one style.

 Ordering is easy.  To pay by check, send a note with your name, address, phone number and email address indicating how many calendars of each style you wish to order.  Enclose your check (don't forget to include shipping)  payable to Poodle Rescue of New England and mail to:

2010 Calendar Contest

Our 2010 calendar raised over $1300 in badly needed funds for PRNE. With your help, this year’s calendar will be even more successful! Here is how to enter the 2011 PRNE Calendar Contest.

• Deadline for submissions is August 1, 2010. Winners will be notified by August 15th.
• There is no entry fee.
• Photos do not need to be of PRNE dogs, but non-PRNE dogs in photos must be Poodles.
• Photo must have been taken by you or a family member. You cannot submit photos taken by someone else.
• No limit to the number of photos you can submit.
• Horizontal (landscape) photos only.
• No borders, frames or text on the photo.

The photo that we feel best depicts PRNE and its mission will be selected as the featured cover photo, and this photo’s photographer will receive a free PRNE desk calendar!

Photo submission guidelines:

For digital photos:

• Set your camera to the HIGHEST resolution/quality. (Photos will be enlarged to 8.5”x11”).
• Please send the original digital files as a .jpg or .tif only.
• Send file by email attachment to info@poodlerescuene.org. In the email, please include your name, your dog/s name/s, your address and phone number. You may also include a brief (50 words or fewer) description of the photo. (Please don’t reduce the file size to email it. If it’s too large to email, please send it to us on a CD or contact us for further instructions.)

You will receive a confirmation of your email entry within 48 hours; if you don’t receive one, assume it didn’t go through and re-send it or contact us.

For snapshots:

• Snapshots must be at least 4” by 7”.
• Please put a label on the back of the photo with your name, your dog/s name/s, address, and phone number. You may also include a brief (50 words or fewer) description of the photo.
• Please do not write directly on the back of the photo.
• Please don’t scan in the snapshots yourself—mail us the prints.
• If you would like to have your photo returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Would you care for a bronze medal with your coffee?

Hopefully, you've enjoyed some of our Poppy's Blend coffee that is sold as a fund raiser for PRNE.  The coffee is produced by Silver Bean Coffee whose owner is none other than bronze medalist Shannon Bahrke!  Shannon graciously donates the proceeds from the sale of Poppy's Blend to PRNE.  The poodles and volunteers at PRNE would like to extend our congratulations to Shannon on her awesome bronze medal win!!!

Sophie

Sophie was found running in the middle of the street.  Fortunately, a kind soul cared enough to stop and get her and bring her to the shelter.  Signs were posted but no one came forward and PRNE was contacted.  With all that she's been through, Sophie has the sweetest demeanor.  She's a perfect dog in her foster home.  She asks to go out when she needs to and sleeps on her very own dog bed.  Sophie is alert and attentive and loves to go for walks.  She does very well on a leash and enjoys the other dogs in her foster home.  

Sophie has a vet appointment this week and will be scheduled for a dental.  Once she's been evaluated, she will be available for adoption but until then, she's looking for angels to help with her medical costs.

Please help Penny!

Penny is a tiny two pound poodle who is as cute as they come! Unfortunately, she had a difficult time with her dental surgery because her teeth and jaw bone had decayed so much. During the surgery, her body temperature dropped to a dangerously low level and they had to stop in the middle of her procedure because her little body couldn't handle it anymore. She seemed to be doing better the next day, but the following night her foster mother awoke to find Penny limp and lethargic. She was rushed to the emergency room where they stabilized her and she is now in the hospital on IV fluids and being fed with a syringe. They need to do more tests and have an ultrasound done to find out what is causing Penny's problems. Her bill is already at $974 and with the remaining tests the cost of her care will be reaching the $2000 mark. Even though her name is "Penny" we think she is worth a million and hope she touches the hearts of others who will help us raise the funds. Won't you be Penny's angel? Wesley

Imagine running along the Mass Pike, not knowing what happened to you or where you might be going. The cars and trucks are whizzing by and look enormous. Of course, everything looks enormous when you are a white, six-pound poodle mix. However, ...when you have the heart of a lion and the belief that you are a bull mastiff, luck and perseverance can help you to survive. Fortunately, Wesley was picked up and taken to a shelter. Enter PRNE and the chance at a new life for this funny little guy. He was quite a sight with his missing hair. Wesley is personality plus and keeps his foster family laughing. Unfortunately, Wesley has problem knees and needs surgery on them. He is uncomfortable now and if the surgery is not done, faces painful complications in the future. Violet

Violet was found in the parking lot of a grocery store and taken to a local shelter. We'll never know what Violet endured during her time on the streets but she is now safe and loved in a foster home. Violet is about 11 years old but is spunky as can be! She is very ...sweet and craves love and attention from humans and canines alike. Violet's dental condition is horrendous - she recently had a dental during which 6 rotten teeth were extracted and several fissures were repaired. Her knees are also in terrible condition which is causing her much pain. She will most likely need surgery on both or she will face complications later in life. She will be having the first knee surgery on Feb 5 and needs help to pay for it. [caption id="attachment_548" align="alignnone" width="130" caption="Violet"][/caption]

The Animal Rescue Site is sponsoring a Shelter Challenge, awarding a total of $100,000 in grants to rescue organizations that help animals. The grand prize is a $10,000 grant, and prizes are awarded weekly!  Final prizes will go to the eligible Petfinder.com organization with the highest number of votes for the duration of the Challenge. You can vote once a day.  Voting ends at midnight (PST) on April 18th, 2010. The more friends you can rally to vote for Poodle Rescue of New England, the better our chances of winning.  Every vote, every day counts - PRNE can pull ahead in the voting even during the last few days with enough support. Rabies Challenge Fund

All states in the U.S. require dogs to receive a vaccination against rabies.  In most cases, the rabies vaccine requires a booster every three years.  There has been ongoing debate in some sectors of the animal care world if this booster schedule is warranted, given that vets do not test to see whether an animal has an adequate level of protection before administering the booster.   With the growing concern about over-vaccinating both humans and animals, wouldn't it make sense to determine how long adequate protection against rabies really lasts after the initial vaccination?  The Rabies Challenge Fund has been set up to help fund this research.  Please read through the information on their website and if you can, please make a donation to support this important study.

Update on Tessa

Tessa's doing well after her surgery. She has a strict regimen to follow (wearing an e-collar 24/7, drops several times a day and no rough-housing - a very tall order for a puppy). She'd like to thank those of you who contributed Angels in her behalf. She still has a long way to go so be sure to check the website for updates and if you're able to make a contribution, we all thank you!
